The conference will take place at Umspannwerk Kreuzberk, a former transformer station at the bank of Landwehrkanal. Located in the heart of Kreuzberg, the building was erected in 1925 for the municipal electricity company and went out of use in 1989. After extensive renovation works, it has been used as event location, with additional space for offices and restaurants.
As the designated location for a start-up campus run by Google, the building found itself at the centre of a controversy around gentrification, rising rents and the influence of multinational corporations on neighbourhoods. After Google withdrew its plans in the face of mounting protests, the venue is in use as an event space again.
